*Comment summary

Comments we got from our classmate about our NGO presentation were mostly positive. Some people said that our explanation was persuasive and informative. We were glad to know that.

Survey Summary

First of all, we would like to express our gratitude to all respondents who participated in our survey monkey research. Those results were quite useful and beneficial for us.

In all, 12 people have joined our survey so far. Though this number might not be good enough to deduce the conclusion, it helped us a lot to understand the common recognition of animal rights today.

In our survey result, we found some interesting facts. First, respondents, especially young people, show their strong interests in animal rights. This surprised us so much, because initially we had thought ordinary people were not so curious about animals or their rights. At the same time, we were glad to know that people are eager to know the situation about animals. On the other hand, the result suggested that most respondents did not know much about the specific issues about animal rights, like experiment on animals or whale hunting. Those people who answered our questions are probably coming from Japan, and their average age is mostly between 15 and 20.

Also, we were impressed by the result which shows what kind of animals are popular or unpopular.
Many of them answered that they prefer cats to dogs. We assume that this is because our respondents were young. Young people these days, especially in Japan, like to watch cute cats movies on video sites, like Youtube. As a result of that, they have begun to realize the true allure of cats, we suppose.

Another surprising thing is that few people showed their attachment to whale and fish. We could not find out why those people dislike them, but this might be because the number of our survey responses was too small to measure the true tendency.

All in all, this survey instructed us quite useful information. Lastly, we want to thank you all respondents, again!

Thank you for your cooperation. Cheers!!

Super Size Me

Super Size Me

Kento and Shinji

The purpose of this movie is to enlighten people especially in the U.S. about how bad fast food is. This film may seem to be unrelated to "Animal Rights", however, the gist of the problems which the film tries to tell us is essential and useful to realize the situations with which many animals are faced and the reasons why a lot of animals must be "consumed" by humans.  It was an Independent film, but received great acclaim for its unique and informative movie plot and story. Actually this revolutionary documentary changed some American bad food customs and affected the improvement of social recognition of necessity of food education for children.
In this film, a young American tries to survive for 30 days only by eating Mcdonald's menus. The name of this reckless man is Morgan Valentine Spurlock, who is an innovative American documentary filmmaker and able screenwriter. His girlfriend named "Alexandra Jamieson" is
a vegetarian and is also a skillful vegan chef. Until the making of this film started, they had eaten quite fresh and healthy vegetable food. Thanks to the good diet style, his health condition was diagnosed by doctors with very good. Though he were eventually becoming ill as he continued to eat the junk food.
At the very beginning of the film, he narrates; "Everything's bigger in America. We've got the biggest cars, the biggest houses, the biggest companies, the biggest food, and finally the biggest people." This line is so impressed. Big people need big things. This seems so ironic, but it is right to the point, but the most important thing is why more and more people in American are becoming obese. Morgan says in the film that Americans used to be not so fat. According to his opinion, this terrible obese trend in the U.S. has definitely been linked to the rapid growth of fast food stores. Law Professor John Banzhaf, who are famous for the lawsuits against big cigarette companies points out that those franchises try to dominate the diet style as people especially children eat fast food regularly in various ways.
Bad food habits have made big people. However, there is a simple question. Why do people choose to eat fast food? Probably most people who love to eat it would understand the dangerousness of fast food to some extent. Then, why are those people stick to eating it? The answer would be the price of the food. Simply, fast food is much cheaper than vegetable and it gives the people the sensation of fullness so fast and makes them obese so easily. People, especially poor people, opt for eating fast food because it is cheap and it is easy to get satisfaction. Then they become fat and ill. In short, bad food customs endanger our health. At this point, another question comes up. Why is the fast food so cheap? That is because many animals are "used" to create meat everyday. Meat is a essential part of fast food ingredients. Those junk food stores often insist they are also selling salads for customers healthy diets, but everyone knows that these rebut is merely a facade of sincerity. First of all, people who want to live healthy lifestyle do not go there. The film concludes that eating fast food too much leads to bad health. We eat meat by sacrificing animals life and we become ill.
Some people say that this film is quite biased and nobody eats fast food menu so much. This accusation might partly be right, but the most important thing we need to think about is how to improve our life and diet style. If we can find a way to change our collapsed eating habits, it would  be beneficial not only for humans, but also for animals. The precious thing that we learned from this great documentary is that good things for humans are the good things for animals as well.

Questions and Answers for Q18

18.Are we able to survive without eating animals' meat?

Firstly, one of the important reasons why we, humans, have eaten animal's meat is nutritional aspects. For example, meat has a lot of protein which is essential for us to sustain our body functions like the immune system. However, some people are against this opinion. they say that we can get necessary nutrients without eating meat. One alternative food they suggest is soybeans. This is because they have as much protein as meat, and they are easy to grow. In addition, these days, there are many soybeans products such as, Textured soy protein(大豆肉), Soy flour(大豆粉), Soy oil(大豆油) and things like that.

11.How is Foie gras (goose liver) made?

According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), which is based in Washington, D.C. and is the largest nonprofit organization advocating animal rights in the world, Foie gras (French for “fatty liver”) is the product of extreme animal cruelty. Factory farms produce it by force feeding ducks so much that their livers become diseased and enlarged. This causes a tremendous amount of suffering and can make it difficult for the birds to walk and breathe normally.
However, there are many people who are fond of this traditional French cuisine.

Questions and Answers for Q1 and Q2

Q1. Is there any difference between animal rights and human rights?

 A. Fundamentally, animal rights mainly demand that every animal should be treated with dignity. At the same time, they strongly oppose the animal abuses. However, it does not mean that they try to restrain people from eating animals.
On the other hand, human rights express that all humans have same rights. They are not demands and requests, but they are confirmations.
The clear difference between animal rights and human rights would be whether they are to give or to already be given.

Q2. What is the definition of animal rights or welfare?

 A. According to “oxforddictionaries.com”, the definition of animal rights is that “The rights of animals to live free from human exploitation and abuse.”However, when it come to animal “welfare”, the meaning becomes quite diverse. Some people say that if we think seriously about animal  “welfare”, we should take account of not only state of the animal's body, but also its feelings.

To be or not to be that is the question

We, human beings, have hugely depended on animals' sacrifices. For example, we consume a lot of animal's meat every day. Moreover, we use animals for medical experiment in order to create new medicine or get new useful information. In addition, sometimes, we hunt animals just for fun.
Our standard of living has been retained by those countless different lives. However, some people have tried to challenge this long-lived traditional conventions. Their movements have gradually changed current the situations surrounding animals. For instance, some regulations on making foie gras have been set in order to protect ducks in various countries. They say that we can live without the animals' devotion. According to their assertion, we should eat crops, vegetables or fruits instead of the life. However, some ironic people criticize them on the ground that those apathetic things also have life.
On the other hand, some people point out that we should take advantage of the benefits as long as we use them humbly.

Should we harm animals for our convenient livings?

                              or

Should we stop harming animals?

We would like to search and discuss this topic from now on.
